Living Social Craft Beer Fest

I've been looking forward to this Beer Fest for quite some time. It's not everyday when you can try a bunch of beer in one small space. It's the ideal place to try out a bunch of new brews, and I don't have to feel bad when I don't care for one because I can just dump it out and move onto the next one. At home sometimes it's such a risk to buy a 6-pack for fear that you may not like it. When you have the option to create your own 6-pack sampler; that makes it a bit easier.

Best New Beer: Devil's Backbone Ramsey's Export Stout
One of the better stouts I've had in a good while, very drinkable. I like stout beers alot, but I find with most I can only have 1-2 pints before moving onto something else; either too chocolatey or coffee-y. This one however seemed very drinkable, not too strong in any one flavor, and very smooth.

Best Beer I've Tried Before: Troegs DreamWeaver Wheat
Even though this festival was about trying out new beers, this is one of my favorite wheat beers. I went back to this stand 3 times over the day. Strong banana smell (which could be a turn-off for some, but makes this beer all the more better for me), semi-sweet in taste, and in the forefront you notice more the spices and lemon taste over the banana.

Best Surprise: Lost Rhino Rhin'Ofest Marzen
This deserves a callout because it was an unexpected favorite. Most stands had two beers to try, I had originally gotten myself the other option and the hubby asked for this one. He didn't like it so we traded and I was pleasantly surprised. I could give or take most Oktoberfest beers. This one however was very bold in taste, had a strong malty flavor, and a little bitter/sweet aftertaste at the end.

Honorable Honorable Mention: Woodchuck Limited Release Summer Cider
Not a beer, but a cider. I'm not a huge fan of ciders, maybe one here and there is okay, but mostly too sweet for me. However for a cider this one had a nice blueberry taste and went down very easily.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Port City Optimal Wit
  • Travelers Curios Shandy
  • Victory Summer Love Ale
  • Abita Andygator Doublebock

When I think beer I also think there better be food here! This will not go well on an empty stomach. There was a large variety of food trucks, we first stopped at Claw and split a Lobster Roll. A bit of a price tag at $14 so you hope they pile on the lobster ... and they definitely do. Second we stood in an enourmous line for the Cap Mac truck. Absolutely worth it though, I got the Sloppy Mac and the hubby got the Mac'n'Meatball. It's a hefty box of mac n cheese and it tasted great ... probably even better after a day of drinking.
